A Reintroduction and Challenging the Status Quo

I did a fun thing a few weeks ago. I reread all of my blog posts, starting from the beginning. It’s been almost three years since I started writing here, and I honestly couldn’t even remember from week to week what I wrote, so I wanted to make sure I stood by what I’ve said over the years. I’ve also been thinking about sharing this blog with more people I know IRL, so reviewing my posts was important to me.

What Did I Miss?

"What Did I Miss" text over a dark background of lightning

Well, hi there. My name is Elizabeth. Just thought I would remind you since I’ve been AWOL for MONTHS.

On Friday, my roomie Lyra and I watched the Hamilton filming on Disney+ (which I use my sister’s log-in for because I’m a cheapskate). It was MAGICAL. And I told Lyra that after watching the musical, which I had never seen, Jefferson’s song, “What Did I Miss?” had become one of my favorites. Don’t get me wrong, the song was always great. But the VISUAL elements really made it. Hence, this post title.

A Spreadsheet and the Paradox of Choice

The Paradox of Choice - owning the stars article moving location spreadsheet

Last year, I wrote about my plans to move away from the Washington, DC area. At the time, I was applying for jobs and was considering cities where I’d be willing to look for positions. Then, early this year, I decided to work for myself instead (eventually). And that completely changes the game–it means I can literally live anywhere (don’t worry; I’ll get to the spreadsheet).

Slowing Down

slowing down blog post owning the stars

I’ve been really bad about posting regularly on the blog lately. Like no post in the month of May bad. And you know what? That’s okay. Things have been really busy (in a good way), and I’ve been trying to be more intentional about giving myself time and space (aka slowing down). When I get stressed and try to power through, it never turns out well.

Priorities and Traveling

I’m traveling out of the country this week (and next). When people learn about my job, a lot of times the response I get is “Wow, it’s so cool that you get to travel!” And in some ways, it is cool. I’m visiting three new countries on this trip, and one of them has been on my travel bucket list for years.

But that doesn’t mean it’s “cool.” It’s usually exhausting and stressful. And, as evidenced by the pet-sitting line item in my last post, it ends up being really expensive. Yes, it is awesome that I get to visit new countries, but I would be traveling on my own anyway. And once I’m not working a traditional 9-to-5 job, I’ll have more time and flexibility to do so.

Don’t get me wrong–I am so excited for this trip. And for the extra week that I’m spending on vacation at the end. But this is also reaffirming that my new career path is the right choice for me and a better fit for my mental health.

Priorities

My priorities of flexibility and freedom mean that even traveling is hard when it’s under a rigid schedule and with strict expectations. There’s also the fact that it’s hard to explore a country when you have specific responsibilities in a professional role on a trip. I’m glad that the direction my life is moving in better lines up with my priorities because I really believe I’ll be happier as my job lets me do more of what I love and on my own time.

Anyway, this is a short post this week; more of an update than a fully fleshed-out post. It’s just nice to get my thoughts in writing and know that even the most exciting aspects of my job come with their own downsides that I’d like to mitigate moving forward.

Next week, I’ll put out the full list of books I read in the first quarter of 2019!

When Optimization is Suboptimal

There’s this insidious trend in the personal finance/self-help spaces that drives me crazy. It’s the idea that we need to optimize every aspect of our lives, hustle hard to get ahead, and hack inefficiencies like we’re machines. Now don’t get me wrong, I love a good productivity hack as much as the next person, but I think this line of thinking can also be dangerous.

Dangerous because it implies that if you aren’t optimizing everything, that you’re slacking. You aren’t trying hard enough, and that’s the reason you can’t get ahead. Well, I’m calling bullshit.

Write Yourself a Financial Love Letter

write yourself a financial love letter

Ok folks, I know that it’s Valentine’s Day. Which can occasionally be a bummer for us Singletons. But single or paired, it’s always a good day to practice some financial self-love. This is probably especially true for women, who have not historically been part of financial conversations. I think some of that is changing, but there’s plenty of work to do still. So we’re going to write ourselves love letters.

New Year and New Goals

Ok, I know that the New Year is actually not really the optimal time to set new goals. But there’s something so enticing about a new year and new possibilities. And this “new goal” has been in the works for awhile and is finally turning into reality. In the past year, I’ve made a lot of progress toward ongoing goals. I’ve paid off my credit card debt and traveled. I’ve focused more on self-improvement and read plenty of non-fiction books. But I also had some set-backs; I didn’t get a job I thought I wanted, and then spent seven months trying to figure out my life. That included clarifying my professional goals, turning down a few seemingly perfect opportunities that weren’t right for me, and thinking about relocating to a lower cost of living location. I wrote all about 2018 in my last post.
